Bonding Fillings

  • Please do not eat until the numbness wears off.
  • Please avoid extremely hard foods in the treated area.
  • There may be some sensitivity to temperature, especially cold. This could last anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the amount of decay that was present in the tooth. Deep areas of decay that are close to the nerves of the teeth and are restored with a filling can be sensitive. Every effort is made to avoid the need for root canal treatment by placing desensitizing medications under these fillings. If the nerves of these teeth were unhealthy, the teeth can become more sensitive.
  • There may be some sensitivity to biting.
  • There may be some sensitivity around the gum or at the injection site. Use 8oz. of warm water and rinse your mouth several times today and tomorrow.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office.

Crowns & Bridges

  • Your gums and teeth may be tender after single or multiple preparations.
  • It is very important to have excellent oral hygiene. When brushing, use a soft bristled toothbrush. Gently massage your gums and teeth as instructed.
  • Avoid sticky foods (taffy, caramels, gum, etc.) and avoid chewing ice, nuts, and hard candy.
  • Floss your temporary crowns gently. Clean and pull the floss out the side so the crown will not “pop off”.
  • If a temporary crown should loosen or come off, please call the office to have it re-cemented. It is very important that the temporary crowns stay in place while the permanent crowns are being fabricated. Sometimes the nerve of the tooth is unhealthy and may be affected. If the tooth does not settle down after the initial tenderness, or if you need Aleve or Ibuprofen to control the discomfort, please contact the office.

Esthetic Veneers

Esthetic Veneers

  • These restorations are bonded to the teeth. They are more durable against compressive forces rather than shearing forces. In other words, tipping forces such as biting on the edge of a restored tooth is undesirable. The harder the food is, the forces generated become greater. Hard carrots, hard nuts, hard-crusted foods, ice cubes and bones should be avoided.
  • Gentle brushing without abrasive toothpaste (see preventive/hygiene) and flossing daily will maintain the surrounding gum tissue. Poor hygiene care can lead to diminished aesthetics and loss of gum tissue. The porcelain does not readily stain. Composite bonding can stain and the color is less stable than porcelain over time. Please ask us to help with the removal of any stain.
  • Hypersensitivity can occur shortly after any type of bonding. Fluoride rinses aid to diminish sensitivity and strengthen root surfaces. Acidic foods and liquids can increase sensitivity. Please inform us if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms.
  • The bite should be comfortable and the restorations should not restrict your movement. Some follow-up adjustments are often necessary and these restorations will be evaluated at subsequent examinations during your periodic visits with the hygienist.

Implants

  • During the healing phase immediately after surgery, it is important that the implant site is free of pressure. The surgeon will provide you specific instructions regarding your care during healing.
  • Whether you have a prototype provisional crown, permanent crown, or removable prosthesis, the implant should be cleaned daily. As with natural teeth, adequate removal of plaque is necessary to maintain the health of the gum and bone around the implant. Daily use of soft toothbrushes, floss and floss aides are recommended. We are always happy to show you how to care for the implants.
  • If you are experiencing a high bite or any discomfort at the implant, please let us know immediately.

Whitening

  • Make sure to brush and floss prior to whitening. Do not use mouthwash.
  • Fill upper and lower trays with a small drop of solution in the front portion of the trays.
  • Use at least three times per day for 20 minutes per session.
  • At the end of your session, rinse the solution out of the trays and off of your teeth.
  • Use ACT fluoride rinse to offset thermal sensitivity.
  • Please contact the office if you have any questions.
  • Keep lips apart when swallowing, (this requires some thought!)
  • Use Vaseline and / or Oragel at the site of any sore gum tissue.
  • If a bad taste persists, dip finger or toothbrush in water and swipe tongue clean.
